MIPI White Paper:
A Guide to the MIPI Camera Security Framework for Automotive Applications
An explanation of how the MIPI Camera Security Framework delivers application-layer security for end-to-end data protection, and configurable security levels based on application requirements
Imaging systems, leveraging cameras and other image sensors, are enabling ever more advanced driver assistance systems. Due to the safety critical nature of these systems, it is essential to protect them against cybersecurity risks such as the installation of substandard or unauthorized image system components, malicious manipulation of image data and violations of occupant privacy.
To mitigate these risks, and build upon the use of the MIPI CSI-2® protocol that is widely used in automotive imaging systems today, MIPI Alliance has created a companion MIPI Camera Security Framework. The flexible framework, which leverages industry-verified security protocols, enables the authentication of imaging system sensors and networking components, integrity protection and optional encryption of image data, and protection of sensor command-and-control interfaces.
This paper explains the key functionality provided by the MIPI framework and details the unique properties of the framework that enables the protection of image data "end-to-end," from the data-source within an image sensor to the data-sink within a corresponding SoC/ECU. In addition, the paper explains how the framework operates at the “application layer,” independently of the underlying in-vehicle network, offering implementers flexibility to configure the level of security based on system requirements.
